জলের সঙ্গে, আগামীর পথে

(With water, on the path ahead)

West Bengal lives on the world's largest delta. Almost everything the state must decide about its environment comes back to that one fact.

The water here is not scarce. It is unpredictable. Salt moves inland where it was not before. Rivers take land and give it back somewhere else. Groundwater in a broad belt of districts carries arsenic. Cyclones arrive with more force and leave behind soil that takes years to recover. These are not future risks for West Bengal. They are present ones, and they sit across the state's agriculture, its cities, its industry and its public health at the same time.

The state also holds something few places do. The East Kolkata Wetlands have treated a city's wastewater biologically for over a century, supporting fisheries and farming on the output, and are internationally recognised for it. Circular economy is a recent phrase. This is an old system that has been doing it all along.

The West Bengal Chapter is where these two things meet: the pressures the delta places on the state, and what the state already knows about living with it.
